Advanced Driver Assist System (ADAS) and autonomous vehicle technologies have disrupted the traditional automotive industry with potential to increase safety and optimize the cost of car ownership. Among the challenges are those of sensing the environment in and around the vehicle. Infrared camera sensing is seeing a rapid growth and adoption in the industry. The applications and illumination architecture options continue to evolve. This course will provide the foundation on which to build near infrared camera technologies for automotive applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The seminar will begin with a review of infrared basics – electromagnetic spectrum, spectral irradiance, night vision and eye safety. The content includes an in-depth calculation for infrared camera illumination and eye safety with focus on driver monitoring for interior and machine vision for exterior. Participants will receive insights into rolling and global shutter imagers, wavelength selection, use of secondary optics, continuous vs pulsed IRED operation, thermal design, power consumption, eye safety certification and HMI considerations. Also included is a brief review of iris recognition, cabin monitoring and face recognition and a discussion on trends and challenges facing optical sensing in autonomous vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
